In May 2005 Dunster Pre-School acquired an allotment and with lots of hard work from everyone involved it has gone from strength to strength. We had parental help to prepare the site initially and with regular weekly visits through each term we have successfully grown a good variety of vegetables, herbs and flowers. All the staff and children are involved with weeding, digging, sowing, planting, watering and harvesting.
The children particularly enjoyed digging mud and looking for ‘creepy crawlies’ and watering the plants.During the past few years we have grown a wonderful selection of fruit and vegetables including strawberries, raspberries, peas, beans, sweetcorn, tomato’s, courgettes, lettuce, potato’s and carrots. The children really enjoy picking and tasting fresh peas.
Last autumn we harvested pumpkins, sprouts, potato’s cabbages and leeks and some of our produce is taken the School Harvest Service. We all enjoy our time on the allotment which not only provides children with lots of outdoor physical activities but gives them a good opportunity to learn about the environment. With good weather we hope to have a bumper crop this year.
